The most common cause of ear pain is an ear infection. Although this condition is a frequent cause of emerging distress and is often associated with children, it can also affect adults. The infection in the middle ear is very often accompanied by a common cold, the flu, or other types of respiratory infections. This is because the middle ear is connected to the upper respiratory portion by a tiny channel known as the Eustachian tube.

A few common symptoms of ear infections include:

• mild pain or discomfort inside the ear

• feeling the pressure inside the ear that persists

• fussiness in young infants

• pus-like ear drainage

• hearing loss tugging or pulling at the ear

· ear pain, especially when lying down

· difficulty sleeping

These symptoms might continue or come and go. Symptoms may occur in one or both ears. Pain is usually more severe in both ears with infection. Chronic ear infection symptoms might be less noticeable than those of acute ear infections.

Children younger than 6 months who have ear infection symptoms or fever should consult a doctor. Always seek medical attention if your child has a fever higher than 102°F (39°C) or has severe ear pain.

Common causes of ear infection are:

An ear infection begins with a cold, flu, or allergic response. These increase mucus in the sinuses and leads to the slow clearance of fluid by the Eustachian tubes. The preliminary illness will also inflame the nasal passages, throat, and Eustachian tubes.

An ear infection occurs when one of your Eustachian tubes becomes swollen or blocked, causing fluid to build up in the middle ear. Eustachian tubes are the small tubes that run from each ear directly to the back of the throat.

Causes of Eustachian tube blockage include; Allergies, colds, sinus infections, changes in air pressure.
